Question of the Day #2

Well, I got one person to answer my question of the day #1 and I enjoyed her answer very much. Moving on to question number 2 ... keeping with the seasonal theme ...

On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day ... did you or do you have a traditional food that you eat? If so, what was it and did you eat it any other time of the year?

Well, let's see. Oh yes! On Christmas Eve (or sometime close to that day) we have scones with the Fazi Family! No, I don't bother making them any other time of year.

I didn't know that you didn't make them any other day of the year :) How special for us.

There are several, but I think my two favorites are rum balls and Russian tea. We only make them during Christmas time, and they are lots of fun to package up and give as gifts. We put them in the mailbox for the mailman, on top of the trash can for the garbage man, and last year my siblings and I ran around in the snow handing out jars of Russian tea to neighbors we didn't even know. It was a blast!

I liked Kristina's mom's rum balls so much that I make at least 140 of them every year to hand out to all the teachers at the school. It's a tradition that the teachers actually remind me of every year. I don't think I could stop if I wanted to.

I never answered my own question. Growing up this was the time of year that Mom made Kieflies (kee-flees) and gave them to everyone. They are still (in my opinion) the best cookies ever, but they are expensive to make and alot of work. Also the recipe makes 100's and it is time consuming. Last year I thought I would be able to tackle it with the help of the kids, but it was too much. Also, the people down here just don't seem to appreciate them like we do up North, so I can't help but feel my efforts are wasted. That being said, they were made every year by Mom and ONLY at Christmas. I wish I had the time or someone else to make them for me still.

Tradition here dictates that we make and decorate Dad's Sugarcookies (named after my Dad) for Santa and friends. We make them other times of the year, but Christmas is always the biggest batch and the most elaborate. Another one is Eatmore Goodie Cookies. Simple and tasty, those are a Christmas staple at our house also.
